First Place: Glen Taylor, Homeless Guy

Halloween activities have been going on for almost a week here at UNCP, giving students a variety of things to participate in.
Create-A-Pumpkin. On Wed. Oct 26, the SGA organized a “Create-A-Pumpkin” Creation Station where students could show their artistic side. A table of orange and black foam cutouts, glitter, bright paints, Halloween stamps, wooden pumpkins, door hangers, picture frames, and candles stood at the UC waiting for students to create something for Halloween.
About 20 students stopped by to take advantage of the opportunity. Some made gifts for their friends, family, or painted the pumpkins to decorate their dorm rooms.

Vintage Clothing/Costume Sale. The University Costume Shop held the 1st annual vintage clothing and costume sale in the GPAC lobby on Oct 26-27. The sale provided a way to clean out old costumes and support the University Theater, and also offer affordable Halloween costumes to students.
Items ranged from $2 to $20. Vibrina Coronado, a Lecturer in the Theater Department, says that masks seemed to sell the best. Other things for sale were shoes, hats, dresses, purses, camo gear, and wigs.
Halloween Costume Contest. The UNCP bookstore transformed itself once again for the 8th Annual Halloween Costume Contest.
The usual brightly lit bookstore was covered in cob webs and black streamers. As Halloween music such as "Monster Mash" played in the background, students entered the bookstore with costumes ranging from classics like Tarzan's "Jane", complete with a live cat, and Darth Vader, to a 1920's flapper, a homeless man, and a duck.

Third Place: Heather Scarboro, One Night Stand

Over twenty students entered the contest.
First place went to Glen Taylor for being a 'homeless guy'. Matthew Locklear won second place as a burn victim, and Heather Scarboro took third place, as a 'one night stand'.
The first place winner received free textbooks for next semester or a large diploma frame. Second place won a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore and Halloween gift basket, and third place won a sweatshirt and gift basket.
Halloween Spooktacular. The UC Game Room played a part in the Halloween festivities across campus. Students found it easy to enjoy free food, including Halloween candy, cookies, chicken wings, and drinks. Neon billiards was also free between 11 and 2. If the students in the game room weren't eating or playing pool, they were creating pumpkin door hangers and other crafts.
"It's really nice what they've done for the students, with the free food and all," says student Emmanuel Locklear, as he puts the finishing touches on a pumpkin door hanger. |
