The 2009-2010 edition of the UNCP yearbook The Indianhead won First Place with Special Merit from the American Scholastic Press Association.

"The Indianhead was one of only two colleges/universities to achieve First Place with Special Merit in the competition; the other was the Argo yearbook from Shorter College in Rome, Ga. We placed higher than larger universities such as Howard, Temple, American and Clemson who each received First Place awards," UNCP graduate and 2009- 2010 Editor Tiffany Schmidt said.

UNCP was the only North Carolina college/university to win First Place with the Special Merit award.

There were two different categories "Content Presentation and Page Design," Sara Oswald, faculty adviser of the Indianhead , said.

New features were added to last year's yearbook. Schmidt designed the cover with four pictures and it was quarter bound. The design style was the first ever to be on a UNCP yearbook.

"I also had some of the pictures treated with UV lamination, which helped the pictures pop off the page. These two things I did for the book really made a difference in its visual presentation and feedback from students and faculty was all positive. Within the book my staff and I also worked on incorporating the headlines into the page design. We achieved this by adding eyebrows, decks and shadows," Schmidt said.

The yearbook was so popular that Oswald had to order more yearbooks to hand out over the summer.

"Last year Clemson University scored the highest out of all the other colleges/ universities. This year our very own Indianhead beat not only them but also Howard Temple and American. Although they won first place as well, we scored higher," Oswald said.

Schmidt, a mass communication graduate, dedicated the majority of her time to perfecting the yearbook.

"Of course the book would not have been possible without the guidance of Ms. Sara Oswald, who supported and helped me to make the changes that updated the book," Schmidt said.

The Indianhead received the same award when David Torres (UNCP alumni) designed the 2008- 2009 edition. "I'm honored to have followed in his footsteps," Schmidt said.

Carolina News Today
Also winning an award was the student produced news production, Carolina News Today.

The broadcast won second place in the student category of the 2010 Ava Awards. At the time, UNCP student Jon Baez was the producer. Carlos Roy was the director and Dante Durant was the associate producer. The adviser of Carolina News Today is mass communications department chair, Dr. Jamie Litty.

"It was like the perfect storm because I was teaching Broadcast Journalism and most of the crew was in the class. We had three returning students who had internships at real television news stations over the summer. And a lot of seniors in higher up positions," Dr. Litty said.

The winning entry was selected out of the 2010 fall episodes.

Included in the broadcast was coverage of the fire that occurred in a North Hall bathroom, the annual Harmony Walk and Taste of Cultures, The bookstores approach to raising awareness about Breast Cancer and sports coverage.

The AVA awards were created by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). The organization acknowledges outstanding work in audiovisual production. The judges present platinum, gold and honorable mention awards in 20 main categories.

This was the first time the news production entered into the award competition. For the 2011 spring semester Krista Smith and Catie Andrews are the co-producers.
