Letters to the Editor: Marriage is a union
By Bryan Carter
Dear Myra:
Sometimes personal
conviction surpasses rational thinking, and as noble as your personal
opinions are to yourself, remember that in the big picture there
are many mansions of thought
.
The Bible has been used to qualify slavery: “No man is greater
than his master;” Yet, I would be hard-pressed to pass a resolution
to re-enact slavery laws based on this verse. Besides, there is
no gay marriage law—it was a simple court order that allowed
the same-sex couples legal marriage.
I respect your
right to your opinion, as is guaranteed in the Constitution—love
is a many splendored thing, and there is more than one-way to skin
a cat. People who are in love (or at least think they are) regardless
of their gender, sexual preference, race or ethnic background, should
not have to hide their feelings, or be ashamed of themselves. They
should not be afraid of physical attack or verbal abuse for being
themselves, reminiscent of the 1950s antebellum south or 1930s Jewish
ghettoes in Germany.
Marriage is
a beautiful union of souls, the very souls that God created, if
your affiliation swings that way—if not, it can be argued
that marriage is a public commitment of love and life to one another.
The former definition should not be reserved simply for heterosexual
partners, but for all people who want to declare themselves committed
couples. What’s antichrist about that?
