Why do gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
students get a special class?

Why do the gays and lesbians get a special English class? Why can’t they take regular classes like all the other students? Are they better students than the heterosexuals? Do I have to become gay to get special treatment and one-on-one individual classes customized just for my lifestyle?

When I saw the sign for the new section of English 106 displayed in the Dial Building, I was shocked. The shock did not come from a moral belief; however, I felt that the homosexuals were trying to segregate themselves from the population of the school. I’m not debating that the GLBT students need a special class; however, it should not be the class that ALL students need to graduate from UNCP. I know legally you cannot deny a heterosexual entrance into the class if he or she needed it for graduation; however, most heterosexual people would not feel comfortable in a class targeted toward gays and lesbians.

I feel that we are all equal as individuals and academically; therefore, it is a slap in the face that they get special treatment to take a certain class. What is next segregation of race and gender? Instead of segregating we should work together instead of against each other.
