Bike racks in all the wrong places

By Carina Bledsoe
Staff Writer

Bike racks may not be a big issue for a lot of people but for those who do ride bikes, it's a concern.

There are five bike racks on campus. One between Old Main and Moore Hall, one behind the gym, one between the Business and Education building, one between the UC and the GPAC and another behind North Hall.A bicycle is tied to a hand rail at the Oxendine Science building. While these racks do come in handy, it's all about location. The rack behind the gym is located in an awkward place because most students won't go back there unless they have a car. The rack on the side of the UC also seems out of place. It's not close to either of the UC's entrances and at night it's a very secluded area.

The bike rack located by Old Main is also surrounded by darkness at night, not to mention that it's in an isolated area where no one can hear you scream!

There are also no bike racks around the dorms except for North Hall, which is unusual considering the growing number of students who have bikes.

On occasion I have seen bikes tied around outside stair railings and light poles. While this is a clever way to lock up a bike, this is not the intended use of outside objects.

This is where bike racks come in handy, who knew!
