Welcome to UNC Pembroke! The faculty, staff and I are excited that you are here, and we look forward to getting to know you better. Learning really does get personal at UNCP, so your teachers will know your name and, before long, you will become an integral part of UNCP.
You have chosen a unique institution that has been changing lives for more than one hundred years. When founded in 1887, UNCP had a single purpose: to educate American Indians so they could have a better life. Since then, UNCP has expanded its scope and programming so that, today, it is a regional comprehensive institution, whose mission has extended to include all races and nationalities. In fact, as a student of UNCP, you are now part of the most diverse institution in the UNC system, with a student body that is 51 percent minority. UNCP will continue progressing into an even finer institution, and we expect you to be part of that development. In my installation speech last April, I set UNCP’s focus on four key themes: to become more efficient and effective as an institution, to focus on student success, to become an institution of choice and to engage the region. Notice that you, the student—your engagement, your growth and your ultimate success—drives two of these main goals.
UNCP’s heritage marks its character and shapes its future. The Lumbee Tribe, centered in Pembroke, emphasizes the importance of being a whole person and living a balanced life. At UNCP, we follow the lead of the Tribe and focus on nurturing your intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual growth so that you, too, will achieve a balanced life—in a word, wholeness. Our core purpose remains to improve the quality of life through education. As we plan ahead, we must weave past and present successes into a future where UNCP’s reputation as a superior regional comprehensive institution places it among the very best of the 16 constituent schools in the University of North Carolina system.
The Pembroke family—the faculty and staff who will help you along in your college career—is committed to making your time here a rich and rewarding experience. But this is a two-way street; you will have to do your part. I urge you to become engaged in the rich campus life that UNCP offers: division II athletics, theater and the arts, more than 80 clubs and organizations, student government and service learning opportunities, to name only a few. Your ongoing involvement is essential to everyone’s success. But there is a caution. Don’t forget the primary reason you came to UNCP. Your academic pursuit should always be your first priority. Your challenge will be to strike a balance between academics and campus life. I’m confident you can do it, and our faculty and staff are ready to help you grow intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. So, get off to a good start in your studies, meet some new friends, and enjoy everything UNCP has to offer.
Again, welcome to UNC Pembroke! In the years to come, you will discover new and exciting ways to connect with your professors, your classmates and your alma mater. You will learn and grow and work to achieve your potential. And along the way, we will help you find and maintain the balance that will ensure we all have a great year.
I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Kyle R. Carter
Chancellor
