The
National Science Foundation (NSF), through
the NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship Program,
has awarded The University of North
Carolina at Pembroke a four-year grant
totaling an estimated $500,000.
Named
in honor of the co-founder of Intel; the
program seeks to encourage talented
science and mathematics majors and
professionals to become public school
mathematics and science teachers in high
need school districts.
The
NSF grant provides $7,500 per year for 7
junior and senior undergraduate science
and math majors in the teacher education
program and for 3 Master of Arts in
Teaching candidates. Recipients must
agree to teach two years in a high needs
school for every year they receive
funding.

At UNC
Pembroke, the program is a joint effort
of the School of Education and the
College of Arts and Sciences. The lead
Principal Investigator is
Rachel McBroom (Biology)'
co-PIs are
Mary Klinikowski (Mathematics), and
Velinda
Woriax (Biology). An advisory board
assists in recruiting and selecting the
scholars. |

HIGH NEEDS SCHOOL DISTRICTS
|
For the purposes of this program, the National Science
Foundation defines a high need district as one that meets at
least one of the
following criteria:
-
It has at least one school in which 50% or more of the
enrolled students are eligible for participation in the
free and reduced price lunch program.
-
It
has at least one school in which: (a) more than 34% of
the academic classroom teachers at the secondary level
(across all academic subjects) do not have an
undergraduate degree with a major or minor in, or a
graduate degree in, the academic field in which they
teach the largest percentage of their classes; or (b)
more than 34% of the teachers in two of the academic
departments do not have an undergraduate degree with a
major or minor in, or a graduate degree in, the academic
field in which they teach the largest percentage of
their classes.

It
has at least one school whose teacher attrition rate has
been 15% or more over the last three school years.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
|
Robert Noyce Scholarship or Stipend Application Form
• Statement of interest explaining why you wish to become a
teacher in a high-need school
• Resume, to include details of relevant experiences
• Official copies of all college transcripts
• Letters of Recommendation from at least two individuals
for whom or with whom you have worked and who can vouch for
your work ethic and performance
Finalists will be invited for an interview and should bring with
them:

Proof of US citizenship or legal permanent resident status
·
Draft schedule for completing the School of Teacher
Education admission requirements
Robert Noyce Applicants must also formally apply for
admission to the teacher education program at UNCP.

ELIGIBILITY & CONDITIONS
Robert
Noyce Scholarship Recipients
Must
be:
·
Majoring in, or have majored in, biology, chemistry, mathematics or
physics
·
U.S.
citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens
·
In financial need as determined by the UNCP Office of
Financial
Aid and Scholarships.
Robert
Noyce Scholarship and Stipend Recipients
Must:
·
Enroll at UNC Pembroke.
·
Pursue a single subject teaching license in mathematics or science.
·
Maintain at least a GPA of 2.75 or above.
·
Attend UNCP full-time and continuously.
·
Teach
in a high-needs school district.
·
Participate in activities associated with the Noyce Program.
·
Submit career information annually to Noyce Project staff until all
requirements of
the scholarship program are met.
