ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Graduate Student Orientation (August 13, 2011)
Orientation for all students admitted to UNCP Graduate School Programs since January 8, 2011, will be held on August 13, 2011 beginning at 8:30 am in the UC Annex. (Click here for more information and to register.)

Graduation Applications (2011-2012):
The deadline for graduate students applying for spring 2012 graduation is September 30, 2011.

By the appropriate deadline, a graduate student must submit the Application for Graduate Degree (for those completing a degree program) or the Request for Certification of Program Completion (for non-degree programs). Both forms are available on the Graduate Studies website (http://www.uncp.edu/grad/forms/).

The form requires some signatures, which the graduate student is responsible for obtaining prior to submitting the appropriate form to the Graduate School. The graduation application fee is $70.00. A late graduation application fee of $25.00 applies after the deadlines stated above.

In order for graduate students to be included on the mailing list to receive information about Grad Finale (October 20-21; March 16-17), Graduate Brunch (November 10; April 20), and other important events, the Graduate School needs to include them on the list of summer, fall, or spring graduates. In addition, the Graduate School sends a list of graduates to the Bookstore, and hoods are ordered by discipline based on the count. The Graduate School does not know who these students are until their application for graduation form is received.

Graduate students expecting to complete graduation requirements in December or May are urged to submit the appropriate application for graduation form to the Graduate School right away if they have not done so already.

Capstone Projects:
Those students who plan to graduate in December 2010 should submit their capstone portfolios by November 12, 2010.  Please contact Dr. Billingsley for more information.

Graduate School:
Please see the graduate school's website and the Graduate Student Academic Calendar for important deadlines and other information. If you plan to graduate in December or May, please make sure you submit your Graduation Application by the appropriate due date.

Internships:
If you are an MAT student who plans to student teach during the Spring term, please contact Dr. Billingsley as soon as possible.

JAMES MADISON MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2007 FELLOWS
The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Washington, D.C. recently announced that it has selected 57 James Madison Fellows for the year 2007 in its sixteenth annual fellowship competition. James Madison Fellowships support the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies.

Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged "Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights," a James Madison Fellowship funds up to $24,000 of each Fellow's course of study towards a master's degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution.

The 57 James Madison Fellows were selected in competition with applicants from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation's island and trust territories. The fellowships are funded by income from a trust fund in the Treasury of the United States and from additional private gifts, corporate contributions, and foundation grants. Recipients are required to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support. The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government, and thus to expose the nation's secondary school students to accurate knowledge of the nation's constitutional heritage.

Founded by an Act of Congress in 1986, the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation is an independent establishment of the executive branch of the federal government. Additional information may be found at www.jamesmadison.gov.
