The UNC-Pembroke College of Arts and Sciences held its Annual Student Academic Awards Ceremony on April 27, 2011. The event is an opportunity for departments to showcase and aknowledge outstanding student perfomances in and out of the classroom. Students recognized by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science are nominated and voted on by departmental faculty. PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC Pembroke’s annual Math Contest on March 10, 2011 attracted 400 competitors from counties throughout southeast North Carolina. Winners advance to the state competition.
Cumberland County and Moore County schools produced the most winners. Team competitions were won by all Cumberland County schools with John Griffin Middle School in algebra I and Jack Britt High School in algebra II and geometry.
Individual winners were: Hannah Caison in algebra I from Cedar Grove Middle School in Brunswick County, as well as Samuel Joo in algebra II and Andre Goode in geometry, both from Jack Britt.
Terrell Wade, who represented Pine Forrest High School in Fayetteville, returned to UNCP’s Math Contest this year after a top-10 finish in the state last year in algebra I as a student of Spring Lake Middle School.
“The geometry was very difficult; I am better at algebra,” Wade said. “I don’t know about winning this time; some of the questions were tough.”
Wade’s fears proved unfounded after finishing in second place and advancing to state competition again. Joy Brown, Wade’s math teacher and coach at Spring Lake Middle School, attended the contest with him.
“Last year we got together to work on sample problems,” Brown said. “Because Terrell was at the high school, I sent Terrell packets of problems to work on.”
Wade said the UNCP competition is rewarding. “The trophy I got last year was better than the state trophies,” he said.
Frank Shreve, a math teacher at Fayetteville Academy, was participating in his first Math Contest.
“We met for practices once a week,” Shreve said. “Because they had not covered some of the material tested, we covered those areas too. I am hopeful.”
Shreve’s work paid off with a second place team finish in geometry.
Dr. Jiyoung Kim’s son, Samuel Lee, attends Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, but because of a limited budget, the school could not bring a team.
“Samuel finished third last year and was excited to come back, so I called to register him,” said Dr. Kim, who is a member of Fayetteville State University’s faculty. “This is a wonderful opportunity for kids in the region. Math is so important to our future.”
Samuel finished second in the algebra II competition and advanced to state competition.
Ian Allred, who works in UNCP’s Mathematics and Computer Science Department, has coordinated the contest for five years.
“It is a challenge to organize this contest,” Allred said. “I was pleased with the attendance. This is the largest group I’ve seen in five years.”
A complete list of this years winners with photographs can be found here.
