University to offer 8-week courses this spring

The university will begin offering 8-week courses during the Spring 2012 Semester. The courses are designed to give students more flexibility in managing their academic progress.

Tentatively, 59 courses will be offered in three kinds of delivery: 1) online, 2) on satellite campuses, or 3) on the main campus. Here is a breakdown:

  • Most, but not all, of the classes provide three credit hours.
  • Twenty-two classes will begin on Jan. 9 and end March 2.
  • Thirty-seven classes will begin on March 12 and end May 4.
  • Sixteen courses are online.
  • Fourteen are being offered on Fort Bragg and three at satellite campuses.

A list of 8-week course offerings and registration information is online:

The courses should be popular, said Dr. Ken Kitts, provost and vice chancellor for the Office of Academic Affairs. “This has been tried with success at other universities, and because we are offering some of our most popular courses, we believe it will be successful here also,” he said.

“Eight-week courses are convenient and allow students more flexibility to manage their courses during the semester,” he said. “They carry the same content and academic rigor as courses offered in the traditional format.”

Registering is easy:

  • Students may register for 8-week courses on BraveWeb. They may register up to the day the course begins for the first 8-week session and through the registrar’s office for the courses beginning in March.
  • Financial aid will be handled the same whether students enroll in the 8-week spring semester courses or standard courses.

Dr. Kitts outlined the advantages for students.  “We believe this is an important option for many of our students,” he said. “It will give students more flexibility in managing their time and balancing coursework with other commitments.

“If a student drops a class early in the spring semester, he or she may be able to pick up an 8-week class and stay on course for graduation,” Dr. Kitts continued. “In addition, students may be able to protect their eligibility for financial assistance by using the 8-week courses to meet federal standards for satisfactory academic progress.”

Dr. Kitts noted that the expanded 8-week program is experimental: “We see if it has the desired impact and then decide if and how it is to be continued. A lot of people are working hard to put this program in place, and I thank them.”

For more information, please contact the Office of the Registrat at 910.521.6298. Campus offices will be closed December 28-30, 2011.
