Meet the Tutors

University Writing Center tutors are UNCP students. We enjoy talking about writing, and have taken a semester-long course on tutoring writing. We look forward to meeting you in the Writing Center!

Brittany Glenn

Brittany Glenn

I am from Belmont, NC (near Charlotte).  I am an English major with a concentration in editing.  I am a member of English Club and Sigma Tau Delta and I enjoy reading, writing, camping, and traveling.

I'm working in the Writing Center not only to help writers feel accomplished, but also to practice critical reading for my future career.

Dean Stephens

I am originally from St. Andrews, Jamaica, but grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am a journalism major with minors in both legal studies and political science. After I complete my undergraduate studies, I hope to continue my education in the field of political science and earn a master's degree.  My hope is  to someday write professionally for a news company. In my spare time I enjoy reading, writing, and listening to music.

Although I'm relatively new to tutoring, I have learned a great deal working with the students who visit the Writing Center. Through assisting students with their assignments, I have gained an insight into my own writing process and have grown as a writer.

Cheron McMullen

Cheron McMullen

I live in Fayetteville, NC, but I am originally from Bronx, NY. I am a junior here at UNCP and I am majoring in chemistry with a concentration in forensic science. I hope to one day become a forensic toxicoligist. My hobbies include listening to music (all kinds), playing video games, and crocheting. I love writing poetry and I am also working on a science fiction novel.

I enjoy working in the Writing Center because I love helping others. Writing is present in many aspects of life, so it is important to have good writing skills. As a tutor, I am able to work with students and watch them progress into great writers.

Victoria Newkirk

Victoria Newkirk

I am from Wallace, North Carolina, a small town near the Wilmington coast. I am a sophomore, majoring in middle grades social studies: history education, with a minor in special education. Music is one of my greatest passions, and I love listening to all genres. In my spare time I love to read, sleep, blog about what I’ve read, and read some more! After graduating, and while working on my master’s degree, I hope to teach social studies in a small town near Pembroke.

Working in the Writing Center is a wonderful job because it allows me to teach others what I know, while constantly learning new things from them. Writing is one of the greatest forms of communication available, and to help individuals express themselves through writing is one of the best feelings in the world!

Tank Steiner

Tank Steiner

Yes, I have a "real" name, but I prefer to be called Tank. I have been teaching English in a high school, tutoring, or teaching composition since 2007. I love to help my fellow students improve their writing. It is always shocking to me that I can read a hundred responses to an assignment prompt and learn some new unique perspective from each one. I am planning to pursue a PhD in rhetoric and composition, preferably from a school on the West Coast. If you are interested in getting help to improve your writing, please come see us!

Lonnie Cox

Lonnie Cox

I am from Orrum, North Carolina, which is approximately 40 minutes from Pembroke.  I am currently a junior. I am a history: secondary social studies education major. Upon graduating, I hope to teach social studies at a low income school in North or South Carolina.  In my free time, I enjoy coaching sports and working out.

As a future teacher, I continue to develop myself in the writing center by tutoring my peers. I feel that becoming a good writer gives people more opportunities in life.  In an ever-growing diverse world, communication is important in developing relationships in the workforce and in college. That is why I am so passionate about helping my peers to become better writers.

Patricia Taylor

Patricia Taylor

I am an English major and I live in Lumberton, but I am originally from South Georgia. I am 27 years old and have an 8 year-old son at home. I am also a tutor for the Praxis Plus program in the UNCP School of Education. When I’m not at UNCP, I enjoy surfing the internet, fishing with my son, reading, writing, and playing with my pets. I have a dog, a bird, and a guinea pig.

I enjoy tutoring in the Writing Center because of the relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy making friends with the other students that come in for help and I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I see that I have made a difference in students’ lives and helped them succeed. It makes me feel great when they continue coming to me and consider me among their friends. Their gratitude and the rise in their skill and grades makes my job worthwhile.
