• A passing score on the Praxis II, an appropriate degree, or 24 hours of undergraduate or graduate art coursework.

Since the foundation courses are at a 5000 level, they are considered graduate-level courses. Students taking the foundation courses must complete them successfully, as defined in The Graduate School's regulations for Master’s Degree Requirements.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.A.Ed.)

Admission Criteria: 

Application requirements for this program include: online application, fee, transcripts, and the applicant must:

1. have a 2.8 undergraduate GPA;
2. submit an essay detailing their reasons for applying to the program, relevant experiences, and personal career goals relevant to professional counseling, and your approach to supporting culturally-diverse client populations;
3. submit the names of three individuals with whom the applicant has a professional affiliation, such as former faculty members or supervisors, who will provide a recommendation on the applicant's behalf;
4. submit a resume or CV; and
5. participate in an interview with program faculty.  Interviews are to begin around February 15.

 

NON-DEGREE SEEKING COUNSELING STUDENTS

The UNCP Department of Counseling allows professional counselors who may need additional counseling courses for licensure or credentialing to take classes as enrichment students. Acceptance depends upon the space available in each course. We reserve seats in these classes first for currently enrolled counseling students and then, if space is available, we will admit enrichment students no less than 10 business days after registration opens for degree-seeking students.  

Enrichment students are not permitted to register for UNCP Department of Counseling Field Placement classes. Field Placement classes include Practicum and Internship: CNS 6100, CNS 6120, and CNS 6130.  Field Placement classes are not permitted as part of an enrichment student’s plan of study.  

Individuals seeking to enroll in enrichment studies must:

a) submit a completed online application;

b) pay a non-refundable application fee;

c) submit an official transcript from all colleges/universities attended (see requirements above).

Prospective students interested in registering for coursework to achieve credentialing in either of the graduate counseling areas ( Professional School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling) should contact the Non-Degree Seeking Student Coordinator, Dr. Nicole Stargell, for information.

This program is designed for students with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an NLN or CCNE-accredited School of Nursing. In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

1. Cumulative undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.0 for full admission.

2. Successful completion of the following courses or equivalent at a graduate level (or taken concurrently with approval from the director of the DNP Program): 

• Advanced Pathophysiology
• Advanced Pharmacology
• Advanced Health Assessment
• Epidemiology and Global Health 

3. A copy of your current license as a Registered Nurse in the United States or United States Territories. The unencumbered active license needs to be in the U.S. state or territory in which you reside and in which you plan to complete the practicum project.

4. A personal statement describing your experience and objective in undertaking graduate study in the chosen specialty.  The personal statement should be at least 500 words and describe:

• The development of your interest in DNP education in Population Health,
• Any special circumstances that you believe require further clarification,
• Your academic strengths and areas needing further development, and
• Your professional goals and how this specialization will help you achieve them.

5. Current resume or curriculum vitae of educational and work experience (minimum of one-year of nursing practice experience recommended)

6. Names of three recommenders that are instructors, supervisors, or professional colleagues, two of which must come from individuals with a minimum of a master's degree in nursing, who are qualified to evaluate your professional nursing experience, academic competence, and potential to undertake a doctoral degree program.

• A personal statement describing 1) nursing experience 2) interest/objectives in undertaking graduate study in the chosen specialty area and 3) special circumstances that require further clarification
• A copy of a current, valid North Carolina nursing license with multi-state practice privileges by the authority of the Nurse Licensure Compact
• A current résumé or curriculum vitae of educational and work experience
• The names of three people who will provide professional recommendations (through the application portal) from instructors, supervisors, or professional colleagues, two of which must come from individuals with a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing
• A Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited NLN or CCNE School of Nursing
• A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale is preferred
• Nursing practice experience (one year completed), and 
• Completion of a course in Descriptive/Inferential Statistics with a minimum grade of “C” or higher.

Note: Applicants who graduated from their BSN programs over 5 years ago must demonstrate competency in basic health assessment, nursing research, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.

Admitted students must provide the following before starting the program:

1. A copy of physical health examination and immunizations as required by the university and Department of Nursing;
2. A copy of current BCLS certification by the American Heart Association; and
3. A copy of professional liability insurance – all students must present evidence of coverage annually in the amounts of $1 million/ $6 million due to clinical practicum requirements of the graduate program

      1. OTCAS Learning Activity (Required): Fulfill the requirement by engaging in the OTCAS learning activity in the UNC Pembroke portion of the application. This involves watching videos and responding to questions. 
      2. Face-to-Face Observation (Optional): Document at least 20 hours of in-person observation, shadowing occupational therapy practitioners in various settings. This is optional and should be documented in your general OTCAS application.

• GRE scores unless the overall undergraduate GPA is greater than or equal to 3.0. Students under a 3.0 GPA may be admitted if they have a GRE score in the 30th percentile in each of the three test sections.
• Names of three people who will provide professional recommendations. These letters of recommendation need to provide an honest assessment of the applicant's skills, as well as clearly address weaknesses and the ability to persevere.  
• A statement of purpose that demonstrates strong writing skills and a clear professional direction that the MPA degree will benefit. Essays should be one or two pages in length and describe what the applicant could bring to the program and what s/he hopes to gain.

Degree Options Include:

MA.Ed. in Reading Education- K-12 Licensure

Admission Criteria: 

In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

• A GPA of at least 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) on all previous work completed beyond high school (secondary school).
• A professional teaching license and a minimum of one year of teaching experience. The MA.Ed. in Reading Education program qualifies graduates who hold a North Carolina professional educator's license for an advanced North Carolina K-12 Reading Education license at the master's level. Applicants seeking to obtain the Masters/Advanced competencies "M" license in K-12 reading education must hold an Initial License in any teaching field from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
• Three professional references, of which one should be a current administrator/supervisor who is familiar with your teaching/career goals.
• A statement of purpose. A statement of purpose is a critical piece of a Graduate School application because it tells who you are, what your academic and professional interests are, and how you'll add value to the graduate program and university community. This is a chance for the Program Director to get to know you. A statement of purpose should be between 500 and 1,000 words. Use a traditional font (Arial or Times New Roman) at a 12-pt size and double-spaced so it is easy to read.

Although standardized test scores are NOT required for admission, GRE or MAT test scores may be submitted as an option by applicants to provide additional information or to supplement their application.

Applicants must have completed 3 years of teaching prior to admission to the program (note that NC law requires 4 years of teaching experience by the completion of the MSA program and an application for a license). In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

• A GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Resume showing current and past work history
• Names of three people who will provide professional recommendations to include: 1) the current principal, 2) a colleague familiar with the applicant’s leadership skills, and 3) an individual knowledgeable of the applicant’s potential to engage in graduate-level coursework and/or to assume a school leadership position (e.g., current or former professor, or a district-level administrator).
• Copy of North Carolina Continuing Professional License. The license must be a continuing NC license indicating 3 full years of teaching experience by the time the student begins the MSA program.
• Statement answering the following questions:

1. Why do you want to become a school administrator (i.e., principal)?
2. In a school leadership role, what communication approaches would be most effective?
3. How would you delegate responsibilities to others?
4. How would this administrative position be most rewarding to you?

Graduate Certificate in School Administration

(this program is the School Administration Add-On Licensure program through Fall '24)

For applicants who hold an "M" level N.C. teaching license and a master's degree in an educational area from an accredited institution.  See requirements for School Administration and note:

• Admission to this non-degree program is highly selective. Applications from those with exceptionally strong academic credentials and those who currently hold an administrative position will be most favorably reviewed.
• The add-on program is comprised of 24 credit hours, which includes a 6-hour year-long internship.
• Applications to this program that do not meet all criteria will be reviewed for admission to the full degree program.

Social Work (M.S.W.)- Applications due Feb. 15, 2025

There are two avenues to an MSW degree, as described below, with preferred deadlines. (Applicants who are offered admission to the MSW  program will be required to complete a criminal background check.)

Essay

• Approximately four to six pages in length (detailed directions HERE).
• Demonstrates the applicant’s ability to thoroughly construct an argument, indicates the applicant’s professional and academic goals, and reflects congruence with the values and ethics of professional social work practice as specified through the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.

 

MSW Admissions Considerations for Applicants without Minimum GPA Requirement (Hybrid Traditional Program Only)

Students who do not meet the minimum undergraduate degree GPA admission criteria of 2.75 but have at least 2.50 GPA may be considered for the traditional hybrid program if they meet one or more of the following criteria: 

• Minimum of 3.00 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 = "A" grade scale) in the last 60 hours of his/her bachelor's degree program.
• Minimum of 3.00 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 = "A" grade scale) in a master's degree program.
• Minimum of 3.00 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 = “A” grade scale) in a graduate-level work attempted (applicant must complete at least 9 hours of the attempted graduate-level work with a letter/specified grade).
• A GRE score of at least 148 in Verbal Reasoning, 145 in Quantitative Reasoning, and 3.5 in Analytical Writing.
• A high overall admission assessment score on submitted admission materials such as narrative essay, resume, recommendation, etc. (Applicant’s level of assessment score is determined by the Admission Committee/Program Director for each admission cycle).

Master of Arts in Teaching  (M.A.T.)- hybrid program

• Spanish Education (K-12)

This program is for applicants who do not have a teaching license but would like to earn licensure as they earn their master's degree.

Admission Criteria:

In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

• Names of two professional references, including one school administrator (if applicable).
• A GPA of 2.75 or higher (4.0 scale)  for full admission. Applicants with a GPA below 2.75 may be considered for conditional admission. 
• As a part of the application process, applicants are required to submit a 150-250 word statement detailing their goals, teaching philosophy, and connection to the MAT program. Please include a brief discussion of your current teaching assignment in your statement of purpose. The statement should be in English and Spanish.
• Candidates without an undergraduate degree in Spanish must have completed the following Spanish prerequisites (or equivalents) before being accepted into the program:
  • SPN 3200: Literary Analysis and Criticism in Spanish (3 credits), and
  • SPN 3700: Advanced Grammar and Composition (3 credits)
  • Or, have passed the Praxis II Spanish: World Language 5195 with a qualifying score of 168

Admission Interview

Candidates will be required to have an admission interview in Spanish with Dr. Ana Cecilia Lara, Director of the Graduate Program in Spanish Education. The interview will be recorded and will be used to evaluate proficiency in aural and spoken communication.

(The interview is similar to the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), which uses the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.) 

 

Master of Arts in Teaching  (M.A.T.)- fully online program (7-week courses)

• Special Education (K-12)- General Curriculum

This program is for applicants who do not have a teaching license but would like to earn licensure as they earn their master's degree.

Admission Criteria: 

In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

• Names of two professional references, including one school administrator (if applicable).
• A GPA of 2.75 or higher (4.0 scale)  for full admission. Applicants with a GPA below 2.75 may be considered for conditional admission.

Note: There are no specific prerequisite courses required for this program. 

Sport Administration (M.A.)

Admissions Criteria: 

In addition to the application, fee, and transcripts, applicants need:

• A GPA of 2.8 GPA or greater on a 4.0 scale
• Have successfully completed a basic statistics course

Addictions Counseling

Admission Criteria: 

The GCAC is offered to currently enrolled UNCP Clinical Mental Health Counseling students, graduates of qualifying UNCP graduate degree programs, and community applicants who hold or are enrolled in a master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited educational institution. Currently enrolled UNCP Clinical Mental Health Counseling students can earn the GCAC certificate while completing the CMHC degree requirements and have the option of completing an addictions-specific internship to satisfy the field placement experience required by the NCASPPB for the expedited path to the LCAS-A licensure. Community applicants who hold or are enrolled in a master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited educational institution should contact the NCASPPB to ensure the degree is a qualifying degree.

Students enrolled in the GCAC must earn a B- or higher in CNS 5860, CNS 5870, CNS 5890, and CNS 5900 in order to remain in the GCAC. Students earning a C or lower in any of the GCAC courses will be removed from the certificate program. 

Advanced School Counseling for Postsecondary Success

Admission Criteria: 

This online certificate is available for current students enrolled in the CACREP accredited, 60-credit hour Professional School Counseling (PSC) program as well as licensed school counselors who aim to obtain advanced training in school counseling.  PSC students can concurrently complete the degree program and this certificate.  PSC students can complete this certificate by satisfying elective requirements (from 60 credit hour program) and taking the remaining 2 additional courses. PSC students can use the specialty course CNS5750 College and Career Readiness in partial fulfillment of the certificate requirements. A PSC student who successfully completes the certificate will graduate with a graduate degree in PSC and the Advanced School Counseling for Postsecondary Success certificate, for a total of 63 credit hours.

Nursing Education 

Admissions Criteria: 

To be considered for the Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education, candidates must submit a completed application, application fee, and official transcripts of all postsecondary education. Additionally, applicants should:

• Possess a Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited NLN or CCNE School of Nursing.
• Possess a current, valid North Carolina nursing license or a license with multistate practice privileges by authority of the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Have a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Submit three letters of recommendation from instructors, supervisors or professional colleagues, two of which must come from individuals with a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing who can evaluate your potential to undertake a master’s degree program.
• Submit a copy of resume or curriculum vitae of educational and work experience.
• Submit a personal statement which describes: development of interest in graduate education in nursing, reason for applying to chosen specialty area, your professional goals and how this specialization will help you achieve them, your academic strengths and areas needing further development, and any special circumstances that you believe require further clarification.

Play Therapy 

Admission Criteria:

Program is available to students who have completed a master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology and want additional training specifically in play therapy.  Current graduate students in counseling, social work programs at UNC Pembroke may also complete the Play Therapy Graduate Certificate.

Applicants should submit the application, $55 application fee, and official transcripts showing completion of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. 

Professional School Counseling

Admission Criteria: 

1.  Only candidates with at least a 48-hour graduate degree in a qualifying counseling speciality area (i.e., addiction; career; clinical mental health; clinical rehabilitation; college counseling and student affairs; marriage, couple, and family counseling; or rehabilitation counseling) from a regionally accredited program will be considered for licensure-only status.

2.  Once admitted, students will be issued a Plan of Study (POS).

3.  Students must complete their POS within 3 years.

4.  Students must earn a “B” or better in all graded coursework applied toward satisfying licensure-only requirements.

5.  Students are obligated to adhere to all other policies established by the program, school, and university.

6.  Students must take Praxis II Specialty Area Test in School Counseling at the conclusion of their Internship. 

7.  Students should be aware that UNCP makes recommendation for licensure only; licensure is granted by the NCDPI. Thus, there may be other requirements mandated by NCDPI before a license will be issued.

School Administration

Admission Criteria: 

For applicants who hold an "M" level N.C. teaching license and a master's degree in an educational area from an accredited institution.  See requirements for School Administration and note:

• Admission to this non-degree program is highly selective. Applications from those with exceptionally strong academic credentials and those who currently hold an administrative position will be most favorably reviewed.
• The certificate program is comprised of 24 credit hours, which includes a 6-hour year-long internship.

• Applications to this program that do not meet all criteria will be reviewed for admission to the full degree program.

  To be eligible for consideration for full or provisional admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Submit a completed online application
• Pay a $55 non-refundable application fee ($60 for international applicants and waived for military members)
• Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
• Submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
• 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
• Continuing Professional License
• Three years of teaching experience
• Names of three people who will provide professional recommendations to include:
  
  • The current principal
  • A colleague familiar with the applicant’s leadership skills
  • An individual knowledgeable of the applicant’s potential to engage in graduate-level coursework, and/or to assume a school leadership position (e.g., current or former professor or a district-level administrator)
• Statement of purpose answering the following questions:
  
  • Why do you want to become a school administrator (principal)?
  • In a school leadership role, what communication approaches would be most effective?
  • How would you delegate responsibilities to others?
  • How would this administrative position be most rewarding to you?
  • What do you consider to be your major strengths as an administrator?
• No GRE or GMAT required

Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery 

This certificate is only available to current UNCP students enrolled in the Master of Social Work program and leads to "Criteria C". 

The North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board (NCASPPB) has approved the UNCP MSW Program as a “Criteria C” program. “Criteria C” programs serve as a prerequisite for applicants pursuing North Carolina Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS) licensure. The NCSAPPB allows these graduates to qualify for licensure after only the equivalent of one year of properly supervised clinical practice instead of two years for others. This means that graduates of “Criteria C” programs are eligible to enter the workforce as independent practitioners at a much faster.

English as a Second Language

The Add-on licensure program may be pursued independently of any degree program.

Admission Criteria: 

In order to receive the add-on license at the M level, candidates must complete the following graduate courses

• ENG 5810—Phonetics and Phonology (offered fall odd years)
• ENG 5830—Second Language Acquisition (offered spring even years)
• ENG 5850—Cultural Issues of English as a Second Language (offered fall even years)
• TESL 5890—Applied Pedagogy of Teaching English as a Second Language (offered spring odd years)

Additionally, all four of these graduate courses may be applied toward either the Thesis or the Licensure concentration of the Master of Arts in English Education; candidates for the Master of Arts in Teaching (Middle Grades Language Arts or English 9-12 Concentrations) may only apply toward their degree one course selected from ENG 5810, ENG 5830, or ENG 5850.

All candidates for an add-on license in English as a Second Language must also complete Praxis II in English as a Second Language (0361).

An MAT student can opt to complete the ESL Add-on program while completing the MAT, but must do so with the understanding that doing so will require nine additional hours of graduate coursework beyond the requirements of the MAT alone.

Students should note the rotation of ESL courses and schedule accordingly.
