Fraternity and Sorority Life of Campus Engagement and Leadership at UNC Pembroke hosted its first-ever virtual Meet the Greeks.

Meet the Greeks is an annual event that gives interested students an avenue to learn and explore the diverse fraternity and sorority options on campus. The current fraternity and sorority life community has 20 organizations that fall under five governing councils. Meet the Greeks is an opportunity for interested students to gain a better understanding of Greek life and find an organization to join.

Joining fraternity and sorority life provides students an opportunity for lifetime membership in values-based organizations. The cornerstones of fraternity and sorority life are academic excellence, leadership, community service and philanthropy, and brotherhood and sisterhood.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Fraternity and Sorority Life office hosted the event virtually. The event began with live music followed by Greek trivia that awarded prizes to five students. Shortly after, students were greeted by staff and then given an overview of the UNC Pembroke fraternity and sorority community.

The second half of Meet the Greeks consisted of chapter presentations in video format. By viewing the videos, interested students could find out more information about joining an organization of their interest.

Lamar James, associate director of Fraternity and Sorority Life explained, “We knew programming would look much different from previous semesters. I am extremely pleased with how our FSL community has handled adversity during the pandemic and used this opportunity to strengthen their virtual reach.”

Producing the virtual event allowed for a collaborative effort among the staff.

“I am thankful we have a strong team. Administrative assistant Robin Johnson really stepped up by chairing this event for the first time and assisted our organizations with producing a quality program for incoming students. Jade Jones was also very helpful in the behind-the-scenes operations of this program. I am grateful to have a strong and supportive staff that always rises to the occasion.”

Fraternity and Sorority Life administrative assistant Robin Johnson agrees. “Meet the Greeks is one of the highest-attended annual events hosted by our office. After receiving the directive for the event to be completely virtual, we all worked together to make sure nothing skipped a beat. Working with the Greek community via email and WebEx allowed us to ensure the annual event would continue in a new way. I am so proud of all the organizations, and it was an absolute pleasure working with everyone collectively.”

“We were excited to see over 130 students tune in for the virtual event. Our organizations strive for academic excellence and we consistently see grades exceed the average campus GPA. Joining one of our fraternity or sororities can be beneficial in so many ways for our students and we cannot wait to welcome new members this year,” James noted.
