Financial Assistance

Admission to the Maynor Honors College is independent of financial assistance. However, there are certain scholarship and funding opportunities that are exclusively tailored for Honors College students.

ESTHER G. MAYNOR SCHOLARSHIP

Born and raised in Robeson County, Esther Graham Maynor was the daughter of Duncan and Dovie Lowry Graham. She married Therod “Horse” Maynor. During WWII, Therod Maynor and Floyd Pike became friends and eventually business partners with Pike Electric in Mount Airy, NC. Pike Electric is the largest electrical contractor in the southeast. Therod passed away in 1967 and Mrs. Maynor stayed in Mount Airy.

Upon Mrs. Maynor’s death, she left in her will that her Trust Estate, minus some specific distributions that she listed, be given to the Trustees of UNC Pembroke for the purpose of establishing the Esther G. Maynor Scholarship. The scholarship is to be awarded to students attending UNC Pembroke who are accepted to the Maynor Honors College and demonstrate financial need.

Beginning with the entering honors class in 2007, Maynor scholarships can be awarded to incoming, first-year members of the Maynor Honors College. This scholarship will cover any unmet financial need (applied toward the cost of tuition, fees, room, and board) minus any other financial aid the student receives. A book stipend is also included. Added support for university health insurance can be requested, but must be made in writing following the awarding of the scholarship. To assess financial need, Maynor scholarship awardees need to submit an annual FAFSA application to the Office of Financial Aid. The scholarship is renewable for three additional years provided that financial need is maintained, the student remains in good academic standing as a full time undergraduate student at the university, and meets the requirements for continuation in the Honors College.

Eligible students will be invited to apply.

HONORS SCHOLAR FELLOWSHIP

Only members of the Esther G. Maynor Honors College are eligible to receive Honors Scholar Fellowships. The purpose of these awards is to financially support academic progress of students in the Honors College. These Fellowships are awarded to incoming, first-year students on the basis of academic merit and are renewable for up to three additional years. These awards are contingent upon the recipient being a full-time undergraduate student, and meeting the requirements for continuation in the Honors College. These requirements are explained in detail elsewhere on the Honors College website. These awards are made by the University Honors Council and Dean of the MHC. Award letters will be sent to honors students selected for the scholarship.

MAYNOR STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

Part of the Maynor Gift has been set aside to support study abroad opportunities. These scholarships are open to any UNCP student in good standing, though preference will be given to members of the Maynor Honors College.

The scholarships are designed to offset expenses associated with formal study abroad opportunities. The program abroad must result in college credit transferable to UNCP, and students must have a demonstrated financial need. Awards are typically valued at approximately $1000, depending upon the number of awards and available funds.

If you are interested and eligible for this scholarship, please contact Teagan Decker teagan.decker@uncp.edu.
