1. Why did you decide to major in English with an emphasis in professional writing?

I have always enjoyed writing and my literature classes in high school and felt like it would be a nice compliment to my second degree in Digital Art. I also felt like I needed a back-up to pad my resumé a bit more.

2. What is your current profession and what does it entail?

I am a Website Designer. Essentially, I create and design websites for small businesses across the country. I don’t write any of my own content, but I use HTML and CSS to design the websites and make them visually appealing and match the client’s brand.

3. How has your study of English (and your emphasis in professional writing) helped you in your current profession?

I took a few website design classes with Dr. Agee to learn the basics of coding with HTML and CSS. I think my degree also helped me become more vigilant for errors in the code (and spelling errors in the content when I see them).

4. What advice do you have for other English majors who want to work in careers outside of teaching?

I would say to not be discouraged when setting out to find your first job, and keep your eyes open to multiple options. There are a lot of careers out there that you wouldn’t expect. I came across this job by chance, and it happened to fit perfectly for both of my majors. You’d also be surprised what electives and skillsets you’ve learned that can help pad your resumé.
