Thursday, August 8, 2024, 7 p.m.

BraveNation:

The latest updates from the National Hurricane Center indicate winds and rain should diminish this evening across much of the region as Tropical Storm Debby continues to weaken. Weather conditions for southeastern North Carolina are expected to improve Friday. However, flooding is still possible in low-lying areas and roadways, especially around the Lumber River.

At this time, given available information, the university plans to transition to a Condition 1—Reduced Operations status beginning at noon Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, and remain at Condition 1 through 12 a.m. (midnight) at which time we will resume normal campus operations.

University administrators will continue to evaluate the situation and should forecasts change, we will adjust our condition status. All university updates will be distributed via BraveMail and posted to uncp.edu/weather.

What this means for students:

  • All classes will resume Friday, Aug. 9, beginning at noon.
  • Early move-ins and room transfers/changes for residential students will resume Saturday, Aug. 10.

What this means for employees:

  • Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work Friday, Aug. 9, unless otherwise notified.
  • Non-mandatory employees may leave early, arrive late, or not report on Friday, Aug. 9, with timely notice to their supervisor. Employees should use leave if they are not working. Please refer to the UNCP Adverse Weather Policy for additional details.

We encourage faculty, staff and students to make the best decisions for your own personal safety. Conditions in your area may be more severe than on campus. Please contact your professors or supervisors if you feel unsafe to travel.

Thursday, August 8, 2024, 12:35 p.m.

BraveNation:

According to the latest forecasts, the region may continue experiencing bouts of heavy rainfall, strong winds and flash flooding as water pools into low-lying areas and roadways today. Portions of the Lumber River and Little Pee Dee River are also expected to peak and could lead to flooding.

At this time all classes remain canceled and UNCP continues in a Condition 2—Suspended Operations status for Thursday, Aug. 8 until further notice.

Campus administrators will continue to evaluate the situation. The next update will be distributed via BraveMail and posted to uncp.edu/weather later today once additional information is available. As conditions warrant, we will adjust our condition status. Should faculty, staff, parents or students have questions, please submit those to askUNCP@uncp.edu.

As always, please be mindful of your personal safety during and immediately following any stormy weather. Do not attempt to drive through standing water should you encounter flooded roadways and be sure to give yourself additional time to navigate if you must travel.
