The Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine continues its work as a cultural ambassador with a 40-date U.S. tour that includes a stop at the Givens Performing Arts Center on the campus of UNC Pembroke.
The performance will be held on Wednesday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $21 to $31 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
"We are honored and delighted to present the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra," said James Bass, executive director of GPAC. "Not only are they one of the world's best, but in light of historic events this year, we are happy to celebrate the power of music with them."
Award-winning Ukrainian American conductor Theodore Kuchar will conduct the performance. The program will feature three pieces: Chamber Symphony No. 3 for Flute and String Orchestra (1985) by Yevhen Stankovych, Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 by Johanne Brahms, and Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 "From the New World," by Antonín Dvořák. Acclaimed pianist Stanislav Khristenko will perform as a soloist.

The Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine was established in 1902. Since the 1950s, some of the world's greatest musicians performed with the orchestra, including Sviatoslav Richter, Heinrich, and Stanislav Neuhaus. The orchestra is a regular participant in international festivals, including the International Festival of Musical Art "Virtuosos," the International Festival of Contemporary Music "Contrasts," and the Ukrainian-Polish Festival "Discovering Paderewski."
The orchestra has toured extensively worldwide, including Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and The People's Republic of China. During the past several seasons, they have completed highly acclaimed recordings for major international labels, including Naxos and Brilliant Classics.
Upcoming GPAC performances include the national Broadway tours of Legally Blonde on March 23 and Chicago on April 27. Dublin Irish Dance, featuring performers from River Dance, will appear on March 13.
