Michael Bullard and Charles Chavis of UNC Pembroke’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety have been awarded the Advanced Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health certificate (MESH).

The advanced MESH certificate is awarded to a select group of professionals who complete comprehensive training in occupational safety, health and the environment. The certificate is sponsored by the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina, N.C. State University and the North Carolina Department of Labor.

“We are tremendously proud to recognize Michael and Charles as recipients of the Advanced Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health certificate,” said North Carolina’s Commissioner of Labor Josh Dobson. “This program prepares managers for keeping their worksites safe and healthy, and that preparation improves employee protection and company productivity.”

The MESH program is designed to increase the professionalism of environmental, safety and health managers at governmental, commercial and manufacturing sites in North Carolina through a rigorous series of continuing education programs. The MESH program strives to recognize environmental managers, raise industry standards and increase the value of these practitioners to their employers and others to whom their services are provided. Earning the Advanced MESH certificate requires successfully completing a two-week comprehensive safety and environmental training after the Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health certification requirements are met.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety at UNC Pembroke is dedicated to reducing injuries and incidents, reducing the environmental impact of the campus and achieving regulatory compliance for all campus departments. The office works to achieve this by providing high-quality and informative training, comprehensive workplace evaluations, emergency response, guidance on proper hazardous materials and hazardous waste management, and promulgating regulatory guidance across campus.

“We believe the health and safety of the university community are of the greatest importance,” explained Bullard. “Continuously working on expanding our training, knowledge and skillset is paramount to our ability to keep UNCP safe. We are looking forward to taking the experience from this certification process and employing it to protect our campus,” he continued.
