\"Frederick

Frederick H. Stephens is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work. Prof. Stephens is being awarded funding for his class, African American Populations, to travel to Pawley’s Island, S.C., and take a charter boat over to Sandy Island. Sandy Island is home to a culture of Gullah/Geechee people who have lived on this Island for more than 100 years. The Gullah/GeeChee people continue to holdfast to their culture and as a community remain intact and live in isolation for the most part. Visitors travel to the Island by boat and are given a tour led by an expert on the culture. Prof. Stephens's mother was Gullah/GeeChee and made sure that he and his siblings were exposed to the subculture. Most recently Candice Glover, \"American Idol\" winner, whose powerful voice won her the title of the popular TV singing show, comes from the sea island culture of Gullah/Geechee with its rich history and proud people. The purpose of this trip is to expose students to a fascinating subculture. Students from previous trips found value in the experience and each of them presented their what they had learn about this unique subculture to several classes after the trip.
