Master’s Level Internships in Clinical Counseling & Social Work

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Counseling and Psychological Services (UNCP CAPS) is committed to the training and development of new mental health professionals. Our mission is to prepare counselors and social workers to enter their respective fields as ethical, competent, and culturally sensitive professionals able to diagnose, treat, and consult on a variety of presenting concerns.

Our team provides the support necessary for positive growth across a diverse range of clinical specialties. With consultation and supervision as the pillars of our training program, interns benefit from weekly individual and group supervision in addition to our “open door” policy that encourages consultation with senior staff in real time.

Applications are accepted and reviewed mid semester each term during the academic year. While a two-semester placement is preferred, interns may request a one-semester placement at CAPS. Internships are competitive and fill quickly. Positions are open until filled, thus late applicants are welcome to inquire about availability.

Site requirements are listed below. If our requirements exceed those of a particular degree program, students and their programs must agree to meet the site requirements.  In cases where site requirements are less than the program requirements, the site will make every effort to meet the higher requirements and embrace students from those programs.

Hours: Interns are on site a minimum of 24 hours per week with a pre-determined schedule. This requirement can be met in three full days or other combination of days/times negotiated with the Associate Director in advance. Interns are also required to serve for the duration of the semester, even if their required hours are completed early. Interns who depart or are excused from the program early will not receive endorsements or recommendations from our site. 

Interns observe all UNCP holidays and student breaks noting these may be different for non-UNCP student interns. 

Supervision:  Interns receive 1 hour of individual or dyadic supervision from an assigned supervisor and 1.5 hours of case consultation / group supervision weekly. Interns also participate in professional development seminars under the guidance of the Associate Director.

Duties:  Interns gain valuable experience in the following areas:

  1. Intake
  2. Individual and Group Counseling
  3. Suicide Screening and Assessment
  4. Substance Abuse Screening, Treatment, and Referral
  5. Outreach Programming and Development
  6. Psychoeducational Presentations

Every effort will be made to tailor experiences to interns’ specific interests.

NC Licensure Externship in Counseling

Counseling externships are sometimes available depending on clinical demand and supervision availability in our center. Counseling externships serve clinicians eligible to practice as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) in North Carolina. The LCMHCA will have completed all preliminary requirements for licensure while pursuing the supervised experience and consultation necessary to complete the process. Externs have the same opportunities as interns and serve our center in exchange for clinical supervision. Failure to honor the terms of externship agreements result in dismissal from the center with no endorsement, recommendation, or continued supervision relationship.
