Graduate Program in English
Welcome to the Graduate Program in English! We offer three graduate degrees, which full-time students complete in two years and part-time students complete in five years:
The Master of Arts in English Education, Thesis Concentration
This concentration prepares individuals with undergraduate degrees in English or closely-related fields for endeavors requiring a Master's degree, including community college instruction or further study in English. Unlike traditional Master of Arts in English programs, our degree includes coursework in the teaching of literature and writing.
The Master of Arts in English Education, Licensure Concentration
This concentration prepares licensed, in-service secondary English teachers to become leaders, researchers, and master teachers. It is designed for English teachers with an initial ("A") license who, after the successful completion of the program, will obtain the North Carolina "M" license in English (9-12).
The Master of Arts in Teaching, English 9-12 and Middle Grades Language Arts Specializations
These specializations are part of an interdisciplinary degree housed in the School of Education. Both degrees, compatible with Residency licensure, allow graduates of accredited colleges or universities to seek teaching licensure in an appropriate area. The English 9-12 and Middle Grades Language Arts Specializations accept candidates with undergraduate degrees other than English with sufficient undergraduate English coursework, though admission may require completion of some additional undergraduate coursework.
Our graduate courses are offered in the evening to accommodate students' schedules; while many courses are online or hybrid, our program is at least partly face to face.
