Casey Burroughs
Chemistry Major
About
At first, Casey Burroughs didn’t know where she wanted to go to college. And she didn’t know if she wanted to play golf at the college level or not after playing in high school. Then, one day she got a letter from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a scholarship offer to play Golf, so she visited and fell in love with the campus. The professors cared so much about the education students were receiving and the need to have a hands-on education.
In May of 2020 Casey graduated with a BS in chemistry and a minor in psychology. Over the four years she spent at UNCP she received the Honors Scholar Fellowship, the Provosts Fellowship Award, the Women’s Golf Athletic Scholarship, the Linda D. Oxendine Memorial Scholarship for Chemistry and Physics, the Ben Chavis/Friends of the Library Endowed Scholarship and the Lacey E. Gone Athletic Scholarship. Casey Participated in the UNCP Women’s Golf Team as well as organizations like the Chemistry Honors Society, Student Honors Council, and Alpha Chi Honor Society. She also had the opportunity to participate in a physical therapy internship at Raleigh’s Performance Center with Brian Schiff. She worked as a chemistry tutor on campus and a cashier at Golf Galaxy and staff assistant at Novozymes North America.
Casey felt that the most rewarding aspect of being in the Honors College was the sense of community. She said that “Being a member of the honors college was being surrounded by other people who were passionate about academics in so many different settings.” Being in Oak Hall allowed her to make connections and friendships with other people. The honors college faculty were always passionate and willing to help.
Casey did her senior project on how sports can help introduce healthy lifestyle habits in children in underserved populations. Her inspiration came from how sports helped her stay active and healthy.
After graduation Casey will start the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at East Carolina University. Casey’s advice to the future honors students is this “Don’t be afraid to try new things or join clubs! Four years go by really fast, so make the most of it!”
