About
Dr. Jerry Griffith, an Associate Professor of Geography at UNCP since 2022, has expertise in biophysical geography and geospatial technologies. His research focuses on land use and land cover change, landscape ecology, and environmental applications of GIS and remote sensing. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas (with honors), his M.S. in Geography from Oregon State University, and his B.S. in Earth Sciences from Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Griffith’s career includes a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Research Associate position at the US Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation Sciences (EROS) Center, where he worked on national land cover mapping and landscape pattern analysis projects. He has also worked for private environmental consulting firms, county planning agencies and as a graduate or faculty fellow at federal facilities including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA Stennis Space Center. Dr. G. has published 19 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals and presented over 100 times at conferences or as invited speaker.
At UNCP, Dr. Griffith teaches Introduction to Geographic Information Sciences, Remote Sensing, Quantitative Methods, Biogeography, Weather & Climate, Principles of Geography, and World Regional Geography. His teaching portfolio also includes Descriptive Oceanography, Earth History and Global Change, Economic Geography, Cultural Geography, Physical Geography, Digital Image Processing, Landscape Ecology, Advanced Landscape Ecology, and Research Techniques and Methods for Data Analysis.
