About
Dr. Lois-Lynn Deuel is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She began her postsecondary education at The University of Winnipeg (Canada) where she completed a B.A. (Hons.) degree in Psychology. She went on to earn Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Applied Developmental Psychology at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Finally, her research interests led her to the discipline of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami where she earned a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.). She was awarded two postdoctoral fellowships—in Community Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Manitoba (Canada) and an NIMH Clinical Services Research Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Deuel has worked as an investigator, research consultant, program evaluator, and statistician on federal, state, and local government contracts. She was a school administrator and program evaluator for The School Board of Broward County. Over the past 27 years, she has been a researcher and faculty member at eight colleges and universities. Her areas of research and practice include the evaluation of systems of care, disability services, educational programming, and therapeutic interventions for mental health, as well as screening and psychoeducational assessment for children with exceptionalities and disabilities. Her teaching repertoire includes a variety of courses in Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, and Research Methods/Statistics. She also led a study abroad course to Europe in the History and Systems of Psychology. Dr. Deuel joined the Psychology Department at UNCP in the Fall of 2020 and is currently instructing Introductory Psychology, Research Statistics, and Guiding Young Children. Her passion is working with students—supporting their academic and personal growth in an inclusive environment and encouraging curiosity and critical thinking through reflections, discussions, and problem-based learning.
Dr. Deuel has been married to her husband, George, a retired army officer, for 31 years. As a Military spouse and professional, she lived and worked in Italy, Germany, and Canada, and traveled extensively, exploring 48 countries. Outside of academia, she leads an active lifestyle enjoying golfing, hiking, skiing, cycling, triathlon, cooking, and art. She has one son in college, who was homeschooled, and an energetic and hard-working Border Collie.
