Pat and his family came to Moore County in 1986. He was named President of Pinehurst Resort in 1987, a position he held for 17 years. During his tenure, Pat oversaw the restoration of the resort and its return to prominence. He captained the effort in recruiting major championship golf events for Pinehurst, including the 1999 and 2005 US Open Championships. He served as the general chair of the 1999 US Open won by Payne Stewart. 

He and a partner formed National Resort Management in 2005 and managed PGA National Resort, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and the Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. In 2011, he became the executive director of Moore County Partners in Progress, a public/private partnership promoting economic development and served in that capacity until he retired in May 2021.

Pat has chaired the North Carolina Travel & Tourism Board, founded and chaired the North Carolina Travel & Tourism Coalition, served on the North Carolina Economic Development Board (2002-2004 & 2013) and the State Chamber Commerce Boards in both North Carolina and New Hampshire and is a graduate of Leadership New Hampshire. He was appointed by the governor of North Carolina to the founding board of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and is past chair of the American Hotel & Lodging Association Resort Committee.

He is past president of the Given Library and Tufts Archives, past chair of the Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills and board member of First Health Physicians Group & Quality First Committee, Moore County Chamber of Commerce, Pinehurst Aberdeen & Southern Pines CVB, Regional Work Force Development Board and the Moore County Airport Authority. Pat currently serves as chair of The University of North Carolina Pembroke Board of Trustees.

In 2003, he was named one of 40 North Carolina Tourism Leaders of the 20th Century by Appalachian State University. He received the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen of the Year award in 2014 and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2021. Pat is a graduate of Ball State University and a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland and the Southern Pines Rotary Club. He and his wife, Judy, have three grown children.
