Dr. Smith is the Program Director of the NIH-funded Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program at UNCP.  She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Wake Forest University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry (specializing in synthetic organic chemistry) from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
