About
Stephen M. Marson, Ph.D., ACSW was hired in 1977 to establish a Social Work Major within the Sociology Department. He retired in 2015 but continued to teach part time for three additional years.
With an MSW, he enrolled in the Doctoral Program of Sociology at North Carolina State University where he completed his PhD in 1991. Simultaneously, he successfully wrote a proposal to the UNC general administration to establish a Social Work Major. While working on his dissertation, he gained full accreditation for the Social Work Major from the Council on Social Work Education.
During his tenure at UNCP, he was awarded the Adolf Dial Creative Work & Scholarship Award (2000-2001), the UNCP Teaching Award (2006-07), and the Dial Community Service Award (2011-2012). Awards outside of UNCP include:

After retirement, Dr. Marson continued to be active in research and publication. Since his retirement, he has published four books and numerous scholarly articles and presentations at professional and scholarly conferences. He continued his connection with both the Social Work Department and the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice by coauthoring research with various faculty members.
