Service-Learning Course Designation Application
At UNCP, Service-Learning (S-L) is characterized as a pedagogical approach that seamlessly incorporates purposeful community service into the course curriculum. The course should integrate service activities that contribute to the achievement of learning objectives and address community needs, all while utilizing structured reflection methods. Faculty members are required to submit applications for a Service-Learning Fall or Spring Semester Designation each semester. These applications undergo approval by the S-L Faculty Fellows and are officially designated through Leadership, Learning & Community.-
Designation Process Overview
Faculty interested in connecting a course to service-learning must complete an application each semester. Once the application has been completed, the service-learning oversight committee will review it to ensure all components are met.
The review process reviews three categories as listed below:
1. Community:
- Does the project description benefit the community and connect resources to provide support?
- Does the faculty member have a community partner already identified? If not, our staff will assist individuals with the faculty members.
2. Learning outcomes:
- Is there a clear connection between the service activities and the course's learning outcomes, fostering reciprocity between the course and the community?
3. Reflection:
- Does the application offer methods for reflection throughout the semester?
