Counseling Programs Recent Achievements

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013: the Counseling Programs were accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
  • 2013: the Counseling Programs were one of three nationwide recipients of the National Board of Certified Counselors Professional Identity Award
  • 2015: a Professional School Counseling student was awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship in the amount of $5000
  • 2016: a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student was awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship in Addictions in the amount of $11,000
  • 2016: the UNC Pembroke chapter of the international counseling honor society, Chi Sigma Iota, was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Program Award and recognized at the 2016 American Counseling Association annual conference in Montreal, Canada
  • 2017: the Professional School Counseling Program established the university's first post-master certificate: Advanced School Counseling for Postsecondary Success
  • 2017: the American School Counselor Association awarded the Professional School Counseling Program a grant for $8500 to study the impact of RAMP status on college and career readiness
  • 2017: the Counseling Programs expanded course offerings to Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC
  • 2018: the Counseling Programs formed the Department of Counseling 
  • 2019: the Professional School Counseling Program established a school-based mental health agreement with Public Schools of Robeson County in a $2.2 million, 5–year grant program to increase the pipeline of school counselors in Robeson County, NC
  • 2019: the Graduate Certificate in Addiction Counseling (GCAC) was created and approved as a Criteria C designated program with the North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board (NCASPPB)
  • 2019-2025: 59 GCAC students awarded a combined $97,450 in scholarship funding from the North Carolina Governor’s Institute for Substance Abuse
  • 2020: the Department of Counseling established the Play Therapy Graduate Certificate
  • 2020: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and GCAC student was awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship for Addictions Counselors in the amount of $15,000
  • 2020: the Department of Counseling was awarded a Department of Health and Human Services grant through SAMHSA in the amount of $198,310 to integrate addictions counseling education and training in each core counseling course
  • 2020: the Department of Counseling created the Regional Telecounseling Development Initiative in response to COVID-19
  • 2021: the Department of Counseling was accredited by CACREP for another eight years
  • 2023: a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student was awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation Military Scholarship in the amount of $8,000
  • 2024: the Professional School Counseling Program established a school-based mental health partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Cumberland County Schools as part of two 5-year grants to provide professional development to districts in our service region and to support students working toward licensure in school counseling
  • 2024: a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student was awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors  Foundation Addictions Counseling Fellowship in the amount of $15,000
  • 2024: the Clinical Mental Counseling Program provided addiction education immersion to UNCP counseling students through the North Carolina Collaboratory's Historically-Minority Serving Institution Grant 
  • 2024: the Department of Counseling established the Post-Master's Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the Post-Master's Certificate for Licensure in Professional School Counseling
