English as a Second Language

ADD-ON LICENSURE PROGRAM

(Graduate and undergraduate)

A. Undergraduate Prerequisites

Candidates must complete or have completed the following undergraduate-level courses or their equivalents:

  • ENG 3460—Aspects of the English Language
  • ENG 3710—English Grammar

B. Graduate Coursework

In order to receive the add-on license at the M level, candidates must complete the following graduate courses

  • ENG 5810—Phonetics and Phonology (offered fall odd years)
  • ENG 5830—Second Language Acquisition (offered spring even years)
  • ENG 5850—Cultural Issues of English as a Second Language (offered fall even years)
  • TESL 5890—Applied Pedagogy of Teaching English as a Second Language (offered spring odd years)

C. Undergraduate Coursework

In order to receive the add-on license at the A level, candidates must complete the following undergraduate courses

  • ENG 4810—Phonetics and Phonology (offered fall odd years)
  • ENG 4830—Second Language Acquisition (offered spring even years)
  • ENG 4850—Cultural Issues of English as a Second Language (offered fall even years)
  • TESL 4890—Applied Pedagogy of Teaching English as a Second Language (offered spring odd years)

The Add-on licensure program may be pursued independently of any degree program. Additionally, all four of these graduate courses may be applied toward either the Thesis or the Licensure concentration of the Master of Arts in English Education; candidates for the Master of Arts in Teaching (Middle Grades Language Arts or English 9-12 Concentrations) may only apply toward their degree one course selected from ENG 5810, ENG 5830, or ENG 5850. An MAT student can opt to complete the ESL Add-on program while completing the MAT, but must do so with the understanding that doing so will require nine additional hours of graduate coursework beyond the requirements of the MAT alone. Undergraduates in the English Education (Secondary) program may apply ENG 4810, 4830, or 4850 to their degree program; undergraduates in the English Education (Middle Grades) program may apply all six of the add-on courses to the Academic Concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language.

All candidates for an add-on license in English as a Second Language must also complete Praxis II in English as a Second Language (0361).
