The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 was passed by Congress to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families, to promote the stability and economic security of families, and to promote national interests in preserving family integrity; to minimize the potential for employment discrimination on the basis of sex by ensuring generally that leave is available for eligible medical reasons (including maternity-related disability) and for compelling family reasons; and to promote the goal of equal employment opportunity for women and men.
An employee's eligibility for FMLA leave shall be made based on the employee's months of service and hours of work as of the date leave is to commence. For additional information on FMLA leave including eligibility and qualifying reasons, please review the FMLA Policy.
Faculty Illness Leave
There may be times when a faculty member finds it necessary to be absent full-time or part-time for an extended period. In such cases, leave with pay will be considered (for up to one semester) subject to certain conditions and procedures, including the completion of a Serious Illness and Disability Leave for Faculty Request Form. The Serious Illness and Disability Leave for Faculty Policy can be found in the Faculty Handbook on the Academic Affairs website.
