P2P on Campus

UNCP prohibits any unauthorized or illegal use of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing and file-downloading software. DoIT will take necessary steps to eliminate unlawful use of file sharing.

Procedures for violations of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)

United State Copyright Office

Various entities work to protect copyrighted materials by notifying UNCP of infringements detected on the campus network. The notification includes the work that was downloaded, when the violation occurred, and the IP address of the device that was used for the download. An IP address is the unique number a computer uses to identify itself on a network. The IP address is specific to a computer and a username is unique to an individual.

When DoIT receives a notice of violation the user of the IP address at the time of the violation is easily identified. If the offender is a resident student the Department of Housing and Residential Life is notified. If the offender is a non-resident student Student Affairs is notified. If the offender is not a student, the appropriate department head is notified.

The offender is then notified by the appropriate department as to the seriousness of the issue. Offenders may have their network access terminated.

Students who commit a second offense have the copyright violation addressed by the judiciary branch of Student Affairs.
