UNC Pembroke’s Art Education program is committed to community outreach and has forged partnerships with community organizations and public schools throughout the UNCP region. School groups visit our facilities and gallery and engage in hands-on learning experience. Art education students participate and facilitate artmaking experiences for arts day festivals on campus and in the local community. UNCP hosts annual Professional Development Days and other opportunities for visual arts teachers across North Carolina. In addition, all art education students participate in service-learning as part of their coursework. We believe that these community efforts raise awareness of the importance of art education and allow community members to be exposed and engage in the visual arts.
Service Learning
In several art education courses; students engage in service-learning projects. The art education program has forged partnerships with Pembroke Housing Authority after school program, Pembroke Elementary School, Fairgrove Middle School, Dunn Middle School, Rockingham Middle School, just to name a few. These experiences allowed students to make connections between theories and practice by giving them a real-life teaching experience outside the confines of a textbook or the university classroom context.
Fairgrove Middle School
