UNCP art history students present at SUNY New Paltz Art History Symposium
Three UNC Pembroke art history students were among the presenters at the 2023 SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium, which was held virtually April 13-16. The State University of New York symposium, a highly recognized conference for undergraduate students in the discipline, accepted papers submitted by Maggie Trimpe, Brennan Jenkins and Nairobi Lewis.
UNCP earns cybersecurity designation from the National Security Agency
The National Security Agency (NSA) — the nation’s leading cybersecurity agency — has designated UNC Pembroke as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD). The CAE-CD designation is awarded to regionally accredited academic institutions offering cybersecurity degrees or certificates at the associate, bachelor’s and graduate levels.
UNCP theatre program alumnus accepted to Juilliard
UNC Pembroke theatre program graduate Jamonte Madison will join Juilliard’s elite ranks this fall. The Juilliard School — a world leader in performing arts education known for its competitive and selective admission standards — is famous for distinguished alumni, including actors Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain.

UNCP student designs Old Main Stream Academy mascot
A UNC Pembroke senior art student is the creative mind behind the sleek design for Old Main Stream Academy’s digital mascot. Preston Coker designed the Firebird mascot for the K-5 charter school. Scott, a senior, is the digital content developer for UNCP’s Office of Online Learning. He is also a standout student-athlete on the track and field team.
UNCP alumnus among first Peace Corps volunteers to return overseas
UNC Pembroke alumnus Cedric Turner-Kopa is among the first Peace Corps volunteers to return to overseas service since the agency’s unprecedented global evacuation in March 2020. The Peace Corps suspended global operations and evacuated nearly 7,000 volunteers from more than 60 countries at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNCP senior’s personal battle inspires career in healthcare
Anthonia Oladeji dreamed of becoming a child and adolescent psychiatrist. But after being diagnosed with an endocrine disorder when she was 17, Oladeji discovered a new career path. Frequent trips to the doctor piqued her curiosity about pharmacy. “It prompted me to want to learn more about the drugs I was being prescribed,” said Oladeji, a senior chemistry major at UNC Pembroke. “My long-term goals are to create better treatments for endocrine diseases and help improve the lives of others.”

UNCP partners with NCDPI to increase mental health providers in schools
UNC Pembroke is collaborating with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to increase the number of school-based mental health providers. NCDPI was recently awarded a $5.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help bolster the pipeline of school counselors, social workers and mental health clinicians.
