UNCP awarded grant to establish a counselor-in-residence program
UNC Pembroke has been awarded a $78,000 mental health grant to create a counselor-in-residence program. A full-time counselor will live in the residence halls and provide counseling services there. UNCP is among 12 UNC System institutions to receive grant funding to increase behavioral health capacity and strengthen mental health resources available to students starting this fall.
UNC Pembroke Awarded $300K DOJ Grant to Enhance Sexual Violence Prevention and Advocacy Efforts
UNC Pembroke received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVM) to support the university’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Advocacy Program. The grant will help the university expand its efforts to proactively prevent and respond to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking on campus. The funds will be spread over three years.
Former Trustee Mary Ann Elliott gifts $6M to establish the McKenzie-Elliott School of Nursing
A new school is on the horizon at UNC Pembroke to honor Mary McKenzie Edwards, a strong mother and role model who overcame obstacles in the 1930s to become a registered nurse. UNC Pembroke announced today it has received a $6 million planned gift–the second largest in the university's history–from former trustee Mary Ann Elliott to name the McKenzie-Elliot School of Nursing. The future new school will be established by transitioning the existing Department of Nursing into a School of Nursing within the College of Health Sciences.
Alumnus Phoenix Locklear accepted into Physician Assistant program at Methodist University
Phoenix Two Feathers Locklear, a Fall 2020 graduate, has been accepted into the Physician Assistant program at Methodist University. During his time at UNCP, Locklear was heavily involved in the Health Careers Access Program (HCAP) designed to increase the number of minorities who are trained, educated and employed in the health profession. He served as HCAP co-vice president. A first-generation college student from Pembroke, Locklear earned a degree in biology with a focus on DNA synthesis. He graduated with cum laude honors.
