First-gen students find success, sense of belonging at UNCP

When Armani Jones-Elliott came to UNC Pembroke as a freshman three years ago, she felt alone and overwhelmed with insecurity. Though academically gifted, Jones-Elliott doubted her abilities, which is common among first-generation college students. “As a freshman, you are scared,” she said. “But as a first-generation student, it’s on another level because you don’t have anyone with (college) experience who can advise you.”

UNCP’s Katie Manueles selected to ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll

UNC Pembroke junior Katie Aguilar Manueles has received national recognition as part of the 2023 ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll for her efforts in driving voter registration, education and turnout on their campuses. Manueles was among 175 college students selected from participating campuses nationwide. Last year’s midterm elections saw one of the highest youth voter turnouts in a midterm election in the last 40 years.

Creative Writing Workshop a Success

Sigma Tau Delta hosted a creative writing workshop on Wednesday, November 2nd, from 4:00-5:00 PM  in Dial 123 for interested students. Members of the English honors society as well as non-members attended, and students responded to various writing prompts in their preferred medium.

Brother, sister making an impact on residence life at UNCP

Maddie and Mason Schwenneker are getting the rare opportunity of experiencing college life at UNC Pembroke together. The Holly Springs siblings have immersed themselves in campus life, and they both go above and beyond as resident advisors (RA) to ensure housing residents, likewise, embrace the campus living experience. This week, their efforts were recognized when the pair was presented with the RA of the Year and New RA of the Year awards at the Housing & Residence Life’s end-of-the-year banquet.

Best-selling author, former Rep. Bakari Sellers to speak at UNCP

A New York Times bestselling author, who was once the youngest African American elected official in the nation, will speak at UNC Pembroke in February. Bakari Sellers, who at 22, defeated a 26-year incumbent state representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature in 2006. He made history that year, becoming the youngest African American elected official.

Double Take: Locklear twins share love for their alma mater

UNC Pembroke Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings and platform guests were forced to do a double-take as identical twins Kelsey and Kyria Locklear crossed the stage, receiving matching degrees during Fall Commencement. The Locklear twins have caused people to see double their whole lives, from their childhood years in Red Springs on the softball diamond in high school and throughout their time pursuing degrees in exercise and sport science at UNCP.
