UNCP’s Lindsay Branch motivated by tragedy to become physician

Lindsay Branch and Sophie El-Mahdy shared a passion for medicine at a young age. After her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, El-Mahdy knew she wanted to become a doctor. Tragically, she never got that chance. She died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism. She was 16.

UNCP hosts Duke-UNC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s annual symposium

UNC Pembroke hosted the Symposium for Learning about Alzheimer’s disease-related Medical research at Duke and UNC (SLAM-DUNC) on May 18-19. The event attracted professors, researchers, clinicians, and trainees from 10 institutions who spent the day networking, interacting, and sharing ongoing research about the disease that affects nearly six million Americans.

UNCP signs MOU with France’s Montpellier Business School

UNC Pembroke is expanding its global reach with the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Montpellier Business School — among the top French business schools in Europe. The partnership provides the framework for future academic collaborations, including joint curricular programs, collaborative research student and faculty exchange opportunities.

UNCP launches cybersecurity pathway with Southeastern Community College

UNC Pembroke recently signed an articulation agreement with Southeastern Community College (SCC) to provide a seamless pathway for information technology students seeking to further their education in the cybersecurity field. The new partnership will increase the pipeline of cybersecurity professionals across the region. Cybersecurity is among the most in-demand professions and fastest-growing career areas nationally. The partnership with SCC will address the national workforce shortage.

Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn visits UNCP, signs prep program MOA

Yamil Hernández Sánchez always knew he wanted to join the Peace Corps after forming lasting relationships with volunteers while living in Benin in high school.  “I’ve always been passionate about advocacy,” said Sánchez, a senior at UNC Pembroke. “I met the (Peace Corps) director of Benin and volunteers, and they all described their experiences and how much being in Peace Corps helped them set up the next few years of their lives.”
