UNCP partners with NCDPI to increase mental health providers in schools

UNC Pembroke is collaborating with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to increase the number of school-based mental health providers. NCDPI was recently awarded a $5.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help bolster the pipeline of school counselors, social workers and mental health clinicians.

UNCP offers seamless path to NCSU vet school

Allyson Chavis and Allyson Lane met four years ago while working at a local animal hospital. It didn’t take long to discover they shared more in common than their name. Topping the list is a passion for animals and a desire to pursue a career in veterinarian medicine. They chose to turn their passion into a degree at UNC Pembroke after learning about the pathway program with the College of Veterinary Medicine at N.C. State University.

UNCP School of Education selected for inaugural NC Educator Pipeline Collaborative Cohort

The UNC Pembroke School of Education and the Old Main STREAM Academy (OMSA) will be participating in the inaugural North Carolina Educator Pipeline Collaborative cohort, along with six other teacher preparation partnerships, to continue to be as effective and innovative as possible in recruiting and preparing educators to enter the state’s workforce.

UNCP, UNC-Chapel Hill establish assured admission program with UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Current and incoming UNC Pembroke students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in pharmacy may be eligible for guaranteed admission to UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the nation’s top-ranked pharmacy program.   UNCP and UNC-Chapel Hill have established an Early Assurance Program partnership with UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, creating a seamless pathway for pre-pharmacy students.

UNC Pembroke’s 3+2 engineering program picking up steam

Since establishing a dual degree engineering program with N.C. State University, six years ago, UNC Pembroke’s 3+2 program has taken off. The rigorous program allows students to spend three years at UNCP, two years at NCSU and graduate with degrees in applied physics and mechanical, electrical, or civil and environmental engineering. Dana Lamberton, the program’s first graduate in 2021, is a manufacturing engineer for PCB Piezotronics, assisting in the design, production, and testing of custom high-precision sensors.

UNCP selected as partner for federal biotech workforce training program

UNC Pembroke was among six universities selected as training sites for the NC BioBetter project as part of the U.S. Economic Development Administration Phase 2 Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The project aims to strengthen North Carolina’s life sciences manufacturing cluster by expanding, connecting and promoting training and career opportunities to underserved and distressed communities, including historically excluded populations.

UNCP creates seamless path to ECU Brody School of Medicine

Freshman Samantha Locklear's path from UNC Pembroke to medical school has been prearranged thanks to hard work, dedication, and a unique partnership with UNCP and one of the top medical schools in the state. Locklear is the 2022 Early Assurance Scholar. Considered one of UNCP's prestigious four-year merit awards, the Early Assurance Program pays for tuition, books and room and board, but more importantly, guarantees acceptance to East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine.

Undergraduate research scholars at UNCP benefit from advanced microscopy training

Student researchers at UNC Pembroke are benefiting from a unique opportunity this summer to experience advanced research through the lens of a state-of-the-art Structured Illumination Microscopy system, thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense. The training program also received a small grant from BioImaging North America, a volunteer-based organization that supports bioimaging scientists in order to promote an inclusive and supportive community to share, advance and succeed together.

UNCP expands partnerships with ECU

Students graduating from UNC Pembroke have been eager to continue their education in our state’s top graduate schools, and ECU is an obvious choice. For years, and in many other programs, UNCP students have been admitted to ECU for master’s- and doctorate-level studies. Academic leaders from both institutions recently met at ECU to ink a new agreement which expands previous arrangements and promises to expand further.

UNCP’s Maya Grimes accepted to ECU Dental Program

Maya Grimes gave fans reasons to smile as a four-year starter and standout defender on UNC Pembroke’s women’s soccer team. Soon, the aspiring dentist will be perfecting the smiles of her patients. The senior UNCP biology student and Chancellor’s Ambassador has been accepted to East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. While most children have a fear or anxiety associated with going to the dentist, Grimes couldn’t wait for her next checkup. “I loved going to the dentist,” she said. “I thought it was the coolest thing ever.”
