UNCP awarded $950K grant to establish addiction recovery center

UNC Pembroke has been awarded a $950,000, three-year grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to create the Southeastern Prevention and Addiction Recovery Resource Center (SPARC) within the College of Health Sciences. Expanding on the current efforts of the Robeson County Health Care Corporation (RHCC) and Robeson County District Attorney’s Office, SPARC will provide a community-based effort to address the immediate and long-term substance use and recovery needs in the county.

Sustaining the Land through Smarter Agriculture

Sustainability, heritage and community drive agricultural education and research at UNC Pembroke. Dr. Erika Young featured in Bob & Sheri podcast

Biology professor Dr. Erika Young is fascinated by the natural world, and her research interests vary from flashy dragonflies and damselflies that dart about the surfaces of lakes, bogs and ponds, to the tiny interstitial animals (meiofauna) that dwell among oyster reefs.  Perhaps, it was her interest in dazzling dragonflies that captured the attention of radio hosts Bob & Sheri (Q98.1).  Young was featured in their podcast, "Cicadas, Shrimp and Lobsters," which aired on June 21st.

Cummings Aerospace hosts Project 3C STEM Career Summer Camp

Cummings Aerospace facilitated a day of exploration for high schoolers attending Project 3C Aerospace and Engineering Careers Camp. Twenty summer campers traveled to Huntsville, Ala., on July 20 to spend the day at Cummings Aerospace. Project 3C STEM summer camps, held at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, are for American Indian youth who reside in counties of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina service areas. The program is intended to expose students to STEM careers, the college environment at UNCP and American Indian history and culture.

Duke Energy Foundation, UNCP partnership connects elementary students with the earth

Local elementary school students are becoming budding gardeners thanks to an ongoing collaboration between UNC Pembroke, Duke Energy Foundation and the Public Schools of Robeson County. Campus gardens are being constructed at St. Pauls Elementary School and the Migrant Education Community Teaching Garden located at the county schools’ central office. UNCP faculty and students partner with the schools to create the gardens, which consist of plant beds, a shed and a greenhouse.

UNCP Day of Giving scheduled for March 2 set to break records

Next month, UNCP hopes to break all previous records to support student scholarship and achievement. The annual #WeAreUNCP Day of Giving campaign is making its return with new goals and generous donors already committed. “It is no coincidence that the #WeAreUNCP campaign is being held the week of UNCP’s Founder’s Day,” said Steve Varley, UNCP Vice Chancellor for Advancement. “Our commitment to honoring UNCP’s historic mission of access and affordability is stronger today than ever before.
