UNCP’s Leslie Locklear appointed to Hunt-Lee Commission
UNC Pembroke’s Dr. Leslie Locklear has been appointed to the newly-created Hunt-Lee Commission. Locklear serves as program coordinator for the First Americans Teacher Education program at UNCP. Additionally, she serves as an adjunct professor in the Professional School Counseling Department and co-chair of the N.C. Native American Youth Organization Adult Advisory Committee. She previously served on the state’s DRIVE (Develop a Representative and Inclusive Vision for Education) Task Force.
Dr. Erika Young featured in Bob & Sheri podcast
Biology professor Dr. Erika Young is fascinated by the natural world, and her research interests vary from flashy dragonflies and damselflies that dart about the surfaces of lakes, bogs and ponds, to the tiny interstitial animals (meiofauna) that dwell among oyster reefs. Perhaps, it was her interest in dazzling dragonflies that captured the attention of radio hosts Bob & Sheri (Q98.1). Young was featured in their podcast, "Cicadas, Shrimp and Lobsters," which aired on June 21st.
Beloved longtime administrator Dr. Charles Jenkins remembered
The UNC Pembroke campus and community is mourning the loss of Dr. Charles Jenkins, former provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. At the time of his retirement in 2018, Jenkins was one of UNCP’s longest-serving administrators and faculty members. He served in many capacities since 1971, including 26 years in senior administrative posts and interim chancellor from 2009 to 2010. Jenkins passed away on August 27.
Dr. Richard Gay appointed dean of College of Arts and Sciences
Dr. Richard Gay has been promoted to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Gay brings 30 years of proven leadership, research and teaching experience in higher education, including the last 17 years at UNCP. He has served as interim dean since July 2020. He has served in several key leadership roles, most recently as senior associate dean and, prior to that, chair of the art department.
Dr. Jeff Howard named vice chancellor for Student Affairs
PEMBROKE, NC – A nationally recognized higher education leader, Dr. Jeff Howard, has been named vice chancellor for Student Affairs at UNC Pembroke. His selection comes after a highly competitive national search guided by a campus committee made up of faculty, staff and students.

UNCP to grow aspiring educators through North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program
The bond Anthony Barton formed with other North Carolina Teaching Fellows at UNC Pembroke was more like family. His experience laid the foundation for his success, first as a classroom teacher, and now as a principal with the Public Schools of Robeson County. “We were a community. The teaching fellows all lived on campus and took the same classes. We were like a family who shared a strong bond. Honestly, without the support I received from Dr. (Karen) Granger and the Teaching Fellows program, I believe I would not have finished school.”
Dr. Suzanne Altobello named Belk Distinguished Professor for the College of Business and Economics
Dr. Suzanne Altobello has been named the William Henry Belk Distinguished Professor Chair in Business Administration at UNC Pembroke. Altobello returns to UNCP after serving three years as a business faculty member from 2015 to 2018. She has more than 20 years of teaching experience in higher education, including internationally.
UNCP remembers longtime professor Dr. James Ebert
PEMBROKE, NC – Former UNC Pembroke professor James Ebert, a staple in the biology department who impacted the lives of countless students during his tenure that spanned nearly five decades, died recently at the age of 96.
UNCP honors local icon establishing the Dr. Adolph L. Dial Endowed Professorship of American Indian Studies
Dr. Adolph L. Dial was once described as “a man for all seasons” largely due to his vast and varied life experiences which he readily shared with both students at UNC Pembroke and his community. His goal was always to inspire and make his world better than he found it. A key figure in the history of the university and Lumbee Tribe, Dial founded the American Indian Studies department and served 30 years as a faculty member directly influencing generations of students—an impact evidenced in the region’s leaders of today who called him a mentor, teacher and scholar.
