A massive cold front is expected to move into the area today, resulting in temperatures in the teens, frigid wind chills, and possibly snowy conditions late this evening. Based on this morning’s updates from the National Weather Service, the university will transition to a Condition 1—Reduced Operations status at 5:15 p.m., today and remain at Condition 1 through noon, Wednesday, Jan. 22, unless changing conditions require an earlier notification.
All classes after 5 p.m. today through noon, Wednesday, Jan. 22, are canceled.
What this means for students:
- It is important to prioritize personal safety and make decisions accordingly. If you believe weather conditions may prevent you from attending class, contact your professor/instructor as soon as possible.
- Review your course syllabi for attendance information and monitor your BraveMail and Canvas for any updates for your classes.
- Questions about specific courses should be directed to the professor/instructor or the academic department chair/school director.
What this means for employees:
- Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work as directed unless otherwise notified.
- Non-mandatory employees may leave early, arrive late, or not report with timely notice to their supervisor. Employees should use leave if they are not working. Please refer to the UNCP Adverse Weather Policy for additional details.
All members of the campus community are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible during the cold weather, venturing outdoors only when necessary. If you do need to go outside, dress warmly in layers and use caution, especially on steps and stairwells, as they may be slippery due to winter weather conditions. Facilities staff will be salting sidewalks and passageways to help ensure safety, but please remain vigilant and take care while walking on campus.
As impacts may vary across the region, we do encourage students, faculty and staff to make the best decisions for their own personal safety. Carefully monitor weather conditions in your area and consult DriveNC.gov for road condition updates. Stay informed by checking your campus email, uncp.edu/weather, and our social media channels for the latest updates. In the event of university-level closings or cancellations, BraveAlert text messaging will be deployed.
