UNC Pembroke Housing & Residence Life understands that a student's living
environment plays a big role in their college experience. While we aim to match
students with compatible roommates and preferred housing assignments, we also
recognize that adjustments may be needed.
Room changes and consolidations are structured processes that ensure fairness,
efficiency, and the safety of our residential communities.

The
Room Change Period
will take place
September 2-4
. This is your opportunity to request a new room assignment, without going through
roommate mediation, if you feel your current space isn't the best fit.
Please note: Space is
very limited
, and changes are offered on a
first-come, first-served
basis.
How to Participate:
-
Schedule an appointment
with the Housing Coordinator using the link provided (appointments are required
— no walk-ins will be accepted).
-
Attend your appointment
at the Housing & Residence Life Office, located in
Chavis Student Center, Suite 210
. There, you'll complete a Room Change Request Form.
-
If no spaces are available at your appointment time, we will do our best to
notify you in advance.
-
If approved, you'll be given a specific time frame to move into your new space.
-
Return your old room key
to the Housing Office within
48 hours (two business days)
of approval. Failure to return your key will result in a
$65 lock replacement fee
.
Note: Residents are NOT permitted to move without official approval. Unauthorized
room
changes — whether during room change period or any other time — will result in
conduct charges and potential fines.
-
Only during the room change period are room changes permitted with no questions asked.
After
the room change period, residents must meet with their respective community director
and
participate in the roommate mediation process to be considered for a room change.
After Room Change: Room Consolidation
Once the room change period concludes, Housing & Residence Life will begin the
room consolidation process. This helps us best utilize available space across campus
and accommodate students still seeking room changes. The university reserves the right
to consolidate rooms to ensure full capacity when vacancies occur and may move
students to another room when such consolidation becomes necessary. Requests to honor
specific roommate, room, or hall assignments are not guaranteed. Residents whose
roommates did not enroll for the semester must adhere to the consolidation policy
If you are in a room with a vacant bed, please be aware:
- You may be assigned a new roommate at any time.
- Your room must remain move-in ready at all times.
-
That means the second bed, desk, dresser and closet space must be clear and
available for immediate use.
-
Failure to keep the room move-in ready can result in cleaning or relocation charges.
To assist students with understanding the department's consolidation policy, Housing
and Residence Life has established the following procedure:
-
For many students, having a roommate enhances their residential experience. If you
need assistance in identifying a compatible roommate, please contact your Residence
Life Coordinator or Assistant Residence Life Coordinator.
-
Students who do not choose the single room option should understand the University
reserves the right to consolidate rooms to full capacity. A student who chooses this
option may have to move to another room and/or must keep their room in
“move-in ready” condition so a new roommate can be assigned. Students
that choose this option may not change the agreement later during the semester.
-
Students who do not obtain a roommate may accept the room as a single and agree to
pay the single room fee. The student should understand that the single room is for
the current semester and is not guaranteed for the next semester. A form to obtain
the room as a single may be obtained from the Housing Office in the Student Center.
All room changes must be completed within three (3) calendar days after notification
to consolidate unless otherwise instructed by UNCP Housing & Residence Life.
